Three inmates who were sharing the same cells with suspended Harare mayor Jacob Mafume at Harare remand prison succumbed to COVID-19, according to Mafume’s lawyer, Tendai Biti.
Biti told court that Mafume was to be quarantined on a medical doctor’s recommendation after three of his inmates died of COVID-19.
Mafume was finally freed on $40,000 bail by a High Court judge Friday after languishing in remand prison for a month, where he battled ill health for weeks.
Meanwhile, MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has been granted $10 000 bail.
Mahere was arrested for publishing falsehoods prejudicial to the state.
She is the third person to be arrested under the same charges after Job Sikhala and investigative journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono.
In granting her bail, Harare Magistrate Trynos Wutawashe said the State failed to prove she has the propensity to commit another offence.
As part of her bail conditions, Mahere has been ordered not to interfere with Rebecca Musariri (mother of the alleged dead child), and to continue staying at her Gunhill residence.
Mahere will also have to report to the police, and submit her passport. – NewsDay
